EU Naval Force Somalia: The Lastest Piracy News


Finnish Ambassador to United Kingdom and Commander of Finnish Navy Visit EU Naval Force Operational Headquarters in Northwood
On Tuesday 30 June the Finnish Ambassador to United Kingdom, His Excellency Mr Pekka Huhtaniemi, and the Commander of the Finnish Navy, Rear Admiral Kari Takanen, visited the EU Naval Force Operational Headquarters (OHQ) in Northwood.

Operation Atalanta Force Commander Strengthens Ties with Regional Partner During Port Visit to the Seychelles
During ESPS Galicia’s recent port visit to the Seychelles, the Operation Atalanta Force Commander, Rear Admiral Gómez Fernández de Córdoba, visited key government officials.  The Force Commander called upon the office of the President, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Blue Economy and the Seychelles Defence Force. The visit ended with a courtesy call on the French EU Ambassador to the Seychelles, His Excellency Lionel Majésté-Larrouy.

Operation Atalanta Warship ITS Libeccio Conducts Sea Training with Royal Omani Navy During Port Visit to Salalah
Operation Atalanta warship, ITS Libeccio, carried out counter-piracy training with the Royal Omani Navy during a port visit to Salalah.
As part of the training, the Italian marines gave a demonstration on how to search a suspect vessel, including the bridge and cargo areas.

Operation Atalanta Flagship Carries Out Replenishment At Sea with CTF 150 Ship FS Var
During a recent counter-piracy patrol off the coast of Somalia, Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia, conducted a Replenishment At Sea (RAS) with French Navy ship, FS Var.  A RAS is a highly-specialized manoeuvre that is carried out by highly-skilled teams on board both ships.  During the RAS, the ships sail very close to each other to enable fuel to be passed via hoses.

Operation Atalanta Force Commander Visits EU Teams During Port Visit To Djibouti
On Tuesday 30 June 2015, during a port visit to Djibouti, the Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gómez Fernández de Córdoba, took the opportunity to visit Operation Atalanta and EUCAP Nestor personnel.
The visit included a call on the Support Element of Operation Atalanta (SEA), as well as the Spanish and German Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) Squadrons.

During her 4 month deployment with Operation Atalanta, Spanish warship, ESPS Infanta Cristina, performed more than 70 friendly approaches along the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean.

Spanish Warship ESPS Infanta Cristina Completes Counter-Piracy Deployment with Operation Atalanta
After completing four months of counter-piracy patrols with Operation Atalanta, Spanish warship, ESPS Infanta Cristina, is on her way home to her homeport of Cartagena in Spain. The Spanish warship was employed in a wide variety of missions during her deployment off the coast of Somalia.

German Maritime Patrol Aircraft Completes Successful Deployment with Operation Atalanta off the Coast of Somalia
In July 2015 the German Maritime Patrol P3C-Orion aircraft completed a three month detachment with Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.
The Orion aircraft played a crucial role in the success of the European Union’s counter-piracy operation by acting as the ‘eyes in the sky’ to provide timely intelligence about patterns of life and any potential pirate activity along the Somali coastline and far out to sea.

European Union Ambassadors Visit EU Naval Force HQ in London for Update on Naval Operations Against Somali Pirates
On Wednesday 15 July Major General Martin Smith MBE welcomed Ambassadors from European Union countries to the EU Naval Force HQ in London.  The Ambassadors were given an update on ‘Atalanta’, the code name for the European Union’s counter-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia.

On 16 July 2015, crew members from ESPS Galicia celebrated Spanish Navy Day on board with a naval procession of the Holy Carmen Virgin, patron saint of the Spanish Navy, followed by religious ceremonies in the ship’s hangar.

Operation Atalanta Force Headquarters Assumes Counter-Piracy Coordination Role from CTF 151
On 15 July 2015, EU Naval Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gómez Fernández de Córdoba, assumed the counter-piracy coordination role from the Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 commander, Rear Admiral Hiroshi Ito, during a meeting at sea on board Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia.

Operation Atalanta Warships Assist Stricken Italian Merchant Vessel in the Gulf of Aden
Whilst conducting counter-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden, EU Naval Force flagship, ESPS Galicia, responded to a mayday call from an Italian merchant vessel, MV Altina. The merchant vessel had developed engine problems and was drifting at sea.

ESPS Galicia Dentist Provides Valuable Service to Operation Atalanta Crews and Local Seafarers
The dentist on board Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia, provides dentistry services to all the crew members on board to ensure that they remain fully fit to carry out their operational role.
It can also provide urgent medical assistance to local seafarers should they suffer a dental injury at sea.

Spanish warship, ESPS Galicia, recently reached the halfway point in her deployment as the flagship for Operation Atalanta; the EU’s counter-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia.

EU Naval Force Commander Welcomes Chief of Djibouti Navy On Board Flagship ESPS Galicia
On Saturday 25 July 2015, EU Naval Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gomez Fernando de Cordoba, welcomed the Chief of the Djiboutian Navy, Colonel Abdourahman Aden Cher, on board Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia.
The visit included a guided tour of the Spanish warship, followed by lunch in the Admiral’s Cabin.

Operation Atalanta Force Headquarters Staff Visit Japanese Detachment in Djibouti
On 25 July 2015, staff from Operation Atalanta Force Headquarters visited the Japanese Detachment of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 in Djibouti. Led by the Force HQ Chief of Staff, Captain Jens Nykvist, the meeting was hosted by Captain Masahisa Motomura, Commanding Officer of the Deployment Air-Force for counter-piracy Enforcement of the Japanese Self-Defence Force.
EU NAVFOR ATALANTA
EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia - Operation Atalanta is part of the EU's comprehensive approach to tackle symptoms and root causes of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa adopted in November 2011.

EU NAVFOR conducts anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean and is responsible for the protection of World Food Programme (WFP) shipping carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia and Horn of Africa as well as the logistic shippings supporting the African Union troops conducting Peace Support Operations in Somalia (AMISOM). Additionally, Operation Atalanta contributes to the monitoring of fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
