Operation Atalanta’s Flagship Sees In The New Year With High Readiness Training
Italian marines on board Operation Atalanta’s flagship, ITS Carabiniere, spent the New Year period conducting training to help them maintain their high state of readiness.
The marines carried out day and night fast-rope insertion exercises using ITS Carabiniere’s helicopter.

Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander Visits Lithuanian Maritime Protection Team On Board WFP Vessel MSM Douro
On Saturday 2 January 2016, Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander, Rear Admiral Barbieri, visited the Lithuanian Maritime Protection team that is embarked on board the World Food Programme (WFP) vessel, MSM Douro.

On Tuesday 12 January 2016 Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander visited the Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) Detachment based in Djibouti.

Rear Admiral Christophe Mueller-Meinhard (German Navy) has handed over the role of Deputy Commander (DCOM) of the European Union Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia – Operation Atalanta, to Rear Admiral Jonas Wikstrӧm (Swedish Royal Navy).
The handover took place at the Operational Headquarters (OHQ) in Northwood, London.

On Sunday 10 January 2016, Operation Atalanta warship ESPS Victoria and a Spanish maritime-patrol aircraft met off the Somali coast to complete a cargo air-drop.

Spanish Maritime Patrol D-4 Vigma Aircraft Flies Home after Successful Deployment with Operation Atalanta
Friday 22 January marked the end of the current deployment with Operation Atalanta for the Spanish D-4 Vigma Maritime Patrol Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA).  The aircraft has been replaced by a Spanish Air Force P-3.

On Saturday 23 January the Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) Detachment held a medal ceremony in their headquarters in Djibouti.

Specialist Italian Navy Divers Conduct Underwater Training on Atalanta Flagship ITS Carabiniere 
In order to maintain their high state of readiness, the Italian Navy divers from the Gruppo Operativo Subacqueo (GOS) that are currently embarked in Operation Atalanta’s flagship, ITS Carabiniere, carry out regular diving training.
Normally based in La Spezia, the GOS are experts in explosive ordnance disposal.
EU NAVFOR ATALANTA
EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia - Operation Atalanta is part of the EU's comprehensive approach to tackle symptoms and root causes of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa adopted in November 2011.

EU NAVFOR conducts anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean and is responsible for the protection of World Food Programme (WFP) shipping carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia and Horn of Africa as well as the logistic shippings supporting the African Union troops conducting Peace Support Operations in Somalia (AMISOM). Additionally, Operation Atalanta contributes to the monitoring of fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
