EU NAVFOR Somalia: Counter Piracy News August



Operation Commander of EU Naval Force Visits Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia
On Monday 27 July 2015, the Operation Commander of the EU Naval Force, Major General Martin Smith MBE, visited the Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia.
Arriving by the ship’s SH3D helicopter, Major General Smith was welcomed on board by the Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gómez Fernández de Córdoba.

EU Naval Force Flagship ESPS Galicia Completes Successful Escort of World Food Programme Ship Liberty Glory
On Monday 27 July 2015, EU Naval Force flagship, ESPS Galicia, escorted a World Food Programme (WFP) vessel, Liberty Glory, along the Somali coast to protect it from any potential pirate attack.
ESPS Galicia escorted Liberty Glory from Djibouti to the port of Berbera in Somalia.  The journey covered 130 nautical miles.  Since 2009 EU warships and maritime protection teams from Operation Atalanta have protected over 335 WFP vessels carrying humanitarian aid along the Somali coast.

EU Naval Force Spanish Orion Air Contingent Hands Over Counter-Piracy Role off the Coast of Somalia
On Tuesday 26 July 2015, the Spanish Orion Air Contingent (XXII) based in Djibouti, completed their successful counter-piracy deployment with Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.
The handover ceremony was presided over by Colonel Juan Carlos Clerencia from the Spanish Air Combat Command.  During the ceremony he congratulated the Orion crew for achieving 100% of their planned flights for Operation Atalanta.

ESPS Galicia’s Commanding Officer Meets Officers from Royal Navy of Oman During Port Visit to Salalah
On Sunday 2 August 2015, the Commanding Officer of ESPS Galicia, Captain Rafael Fernandez-Pintado, met officers from the Royal Navy of Oman during the Spanish warship’s port visit to Salalah.
Captain Fernandez-Pintado was hosted by the Chief of the Royal Navy of Oman Naval Base, and during the visit both discussed the on-going counter-piracy operations and potential future training opportunities between Operation Atalanta and Royal Navy of Oman warships.

Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia Hosts Indian Navy Commander in Port of Salalah
On 31 July 2015, Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia, sailed into the port of Salalah to resupply the Spanish warship with food and stores.  During the visit, Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Fernández Gómez de Córdoba, took the opportunity to invite on board the commanding officer of INS Sunayna, Commander Sarvpreet Singh, as the Indian warship was also berthed in the Omani port.

Operation Atalanta Serbian Maritime Team Hands Over Close Protection Role of World Food Programme Vessel MV Douro to Lithuanian Forces
On Wednesday 5 August 2015, the Operation Atalanta Serbian Maritime Protection team that has been embarked on World Food Programme (WFP) vessel, MSM Douro, for the past four months to protect it from potential pirate attack, handed over the role to a team from Lithuania.
The handover ceremony between the Lithuanian and Serbian forces took place in Djibouti on board MV Douro.

EU Naval Force Operational Headquarters in Northwood Hosts Head of German Armed Forces Operational Command Lieutenant General Hans-Werner Fritz
On Thursday 6 August 2015, the Head of German Armed Forces Operational Command, Lieutenant General Hans-Werner Fritz, visited the EU Naval Force Operational Headquarters at Northwood.
Lieutenant General Hans-Werner Fritz was met by the Deputy Operation Commander of the EU Naval Force, Rear Admiral Christoph Joachim Muller-Meinhard (German Navy).

Colombian Warship ARC 7 De Agosto Starts Collaboration with Operation Atalanta
On Saturday 8th August 2015, Colombian warship, ARC 7 de Agosto, arrived in the Gulf of Aden to start her counter-piracy operations in close collaboration with Operation Atalanta.
Commanded by Captain Darwin Alberto Alonso Torres, ARC 7 de Agosto has a Spanish Navy liaison team on board to help co-ordinate the day to day operations with the EU Naval Force flagship, ESPS Galicia.

Operation Atalanta Maritime Patrol Aircraft Provides Aerial Surveillance as Puntland Maritime Forces Rescue Crew of Stricken Yemeni Fishing Vessel from a Somali Beach
On Friday 7 August 2015, maritime forces in Puntland carried out a successful operation to rescue crew members from a stricken Yemeni fishing vessel, FV Al Amal, which had run aground on to a Somali beach after it suffered engine problems.

Spanish Warship ESPS Meteoro Sets Sail to Join Operation Atalanta
On Sunday 9th August 2015, Spanish warship ESPS Meteoro set sail from her home port in the Canary Islands to start her counter-piracy deployment with Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.
ESPS Meteoro will be joining Operation Atalanta for her second time at the start of September, and is commanded by Lieutenant Commander José Almira.

Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS GALICIA Hosts Pakistani Navy During Port Visit in Oman
On Wednesday 12th August ESPS Galicia hosted officers from the Pakistani Navy during the Spanish warship’s port visit to Muscat.
The Operation Atalanta Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gómez Fernández de Córdoba, invited the Commanding Officer of PNS Aslat, Commander Jamal Alam and members of his crew on board.  PNS Aslat is deployed as part of the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) counter-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden.

Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia Welcomes Spanish Ambassador to Oman On Board
On Wednesday 12 August Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia, hosted the Spanish Ambassador to Oman during a port visit to Muscat.  The Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Fernández Gómez de Córdoba, welcomed His Excellency Mr Juan José Urtasun on board.

Operation Atalanta Warship ITS Libeccio Provides Much-Needed Food and Water to Stranded Seafarers as they Wait for Rescue Vessel
Sailors from Italian Navy warship, ITS Libeccio, which is currently deployed in the Indian Ocean as part of the European Union’s counter-piracy operation ‘Atalanta’, have provided much-needed food and water to twenty four stranded seafarers.

European Union Naval Force Strengthens Ties with Royal Omani Navy During ESPS Galicia’s Visit to Muscat
During a port visit to Muscat, the European Union Naval Force flagship, Spanish warship, ESPS Galicia, strengthened relations with the Royal Omani Navy.

Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia and Colombian Warship ARC 7 de Agosto Meet at Sea off the Coast of Somalia
On Saturday 22 August, ESPS Galicia rendezvoused with ARC 7 De Agosto off the coast of Somalia as part of the Colombian warship’s collaboration with Operation Atalanta.
Whilst carrying out a replenishment at sea (RAS) of stores and food, the EU Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Fernández Gómez de Córdoba, and members of ESPS Galicia’s crew were flown on board ARC 7 De Agosto by the Colombian warship’s Augusta Bell 412 helicopter.

Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia Receives Visit from EU Naval Force Deputy Commander
On Sunday 23rd August 2015, the Deputy Commander of Operation Atalanta, Rear Admiral Christoph Joachim Müller-Meinhard, visited ESPS Galicia whilst at sea in the Gulf of Aden.
Rear Admiral Müeller-Meinhard flew out to ESPS Galicia from Salalah in Oman via the Spanish warship’s SH3D Sea King helicopter, where he was greeted by the Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gómez Fernández de Córdoba.

Operation Atalanta Force Commander Visits German Navy Ship FGS Erfurt at Sea
On Monday 24th August 2015, the Operation Atalanta Force Commander, Rear Admiral Gómez Fernández de Córdoba, was welcomed on board FGS Erfurt.
The Force Commander flew to FGS Erfurt via Galicia’s SH3D Sea King helicopter. After being welcomed on board by Commander Andreas Kaspar, the Force Commander was given a tour of the German warship.  During the visit, the Spanish helicopter crew was able to carry out Emergency Low Visibility Approach exercises.  The training is vital for both the ship and helicopter crews.

Operation Atlanta Flagship Completes Successful Replenishment at Sea with United States Navy
During a recent counter-piracy patrol off the coast of Somalia, Operation Atalanta flagship, ESPS Galicia, conducted a ‘replenishment at sea’ (RAS) with USNS John Ericsson.
USNS John Ericsson is currently deployed with Task Force 53, that regularly provides replenishment support to European Union counter-piracy warships.

EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia - Operation Atalanta is part of the EU's comprehensive approach to tackle symptoms and root causes of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa adopted in November 2011.

EU NAVFOR conducts anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean and is responsible for the protection of World Food Programme (WFP) shipping carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia and Horn of Africa as well as the logistic shippings supporting the African Union troops conducting Peace Support Operations in Somalia (AMISOM). Additionally, Operation Atalanta contributes to the monitoring of fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
