FGS Erfurt Conducts First Replenishment at Sea with USNS John Ericsson Since Deploying with Operation Atalanta
On Saturday 22 August FGS Erfurt carried out her first replenishment at sea (RAS) since deploying with Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.
A RAS is a specialised manoeuvre that requires a high level of coordination between two vessels.  After approaching USNS John Ericsson on her port side, fuel hoses and supply lines were passed between the ships to transfer fuel and stores.


Operation Atalanta Warship FGS Erfurt Trains Djiboutian Navy During Port Visit
On Sunday 20th August, during a port visit to Djibouti, Operation Atalanta warship, FGS Erfurt, hosted and trained members of the Djiboutian Navy and Coast Guard.
The training consisted of navigational theory and equipment, as well as essential fire-fighting and damage control skills.  The visit to the German warship gave the Djiboutian Navy and Coast Guard hands-on practical experience of how to use the safety equipment.


A Day in the Life of Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Casa 235 Air Contingent on Deployment with Operation Atalanta
Since the Spanish D4 CASA-235 Vigma Air Contingent took over counter-piracy duties from the Spanish P-3 Orion crew in July 2015, the team has been very busy patrolling the waters off the coast of Somalia forever on the look-out for any potential pirate activity.


Lithuanian Navy Team Provides Counter-Piracy Protection to World Food Programme Vessel MSM Douro as part of Deployment with Operation Atalanta
Since the start of August 2015, a team from the Lithuanian Navy has been stationed on board World Food Programme (WFP) vessel, MSM Douro, as part of Lithuania’s contribution to the European Union’s counter-piracy efforts off the coast of Somalia.


Spanish Warship ESPS Meteoro Joins Operation Atalanta
On Tuesday 1st September 2015, Spanish warship, ESPS Meteoro, joined Operation Atalanta off the Coast of Somalia for the second time.
ESPS Meteoro left her home port of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands at the beginning of August to start her three month deployment with the EU’s counter-piracy operation.


ARC 7 de Agosto Commanding Officer Visits Royal Navy of Oman Senior Officer During Visit to Muscat
The Colombian warship, Arc 7 de Agosto, is currently working with the European Union’s counter-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia.
During their recent port visit to Muscat, Arc 7 de Agosto’s commanding officer took the opportunity to visit the Royal Navy of Oman Principal Staff Officer, Yaqoob Yousuf Abdullah Al Kameshki.


Colombian Warship ARC 7 de Agosto Welcomes Sultan Qaboos Naval Academy Officers On Board
During the Colombian warship’s recent port visit to Muscat, ARC 7 de Agosto welcomed officers from the Sultan Qaboos Naval Academy on board.
After being given a tour of the ship and meeting members of the Colombian crew, the Naval Academy officers expressed their appreciation of being invited on board.


HNLMS Groningen Joins Operation Atalanta off the Coast of Somalia
Having departed her home port in the Netherlands weeks earlier, on Thursday 27 August 2015 Royal Netherlands Navy warship, HNLMS Groningen, arrived in the Gulf of Aden to start her counter-piracy operations with the EU Naval Force.


Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia Trains with Seychelles Maritime Police
On Thursday 3 September ESPS Galicia conducted maritime training with the Seychelles Maritime Police.
The training allowed the Spanish Crew and the Seychelles Maritime Police to practice man-over-board drills, navigation safety briefs and mooring practices using the Spanish warship’s rigid-hulled inflatable boat.


Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia Provides Urgent Medical Aid to Injured Seafarer
On Sunday 6 September, whilst conducting counter-piracy patrols north of the Seychelles, ESPS Galicia provided urgent medical assistance to an injured seafarer, who had suffered serious injuries to his hand.
After receiving a distress call from the fishing vessel’s owners, ESPS Galicia sailed towards its location and as soon as it was in range, the Spanish Navy warship’s helicopter was launched.


Operation Atalanta Ship ESPS Meteoro Meets Colombian Warship ARC 7 De Agosto at Sea
On Friday 4th September 2015 Spanish warship, ESPS Meteoro, rendezvoused with Colombian warship, ARC 7 de Agosto, off the coast of Somalia.
As part of the Colombian warship’s close collaboration with Operation Atalanta, members of the crew were flown on board ESPS Meteoro for a tour of the ship and a briefing on its capabilities.


Operation Atalanta Ships Maintain High State of Readiness with Support from International Replenishment Vessels
Warships deployed with Operation Atalanta are able to remain at sea to protect World Food Programme (WFP) vessels and conduct counter-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean due to the vital support that they receive from re-supply vessels, such as USNS Carl Brashear (US) and RFA Fort Victoria (UK).

On Thursday 27 August 2015 Royal Netherlands Navy warship, HNLMS Groningen, which is currently deployed with Operation Atalanta, completed her first replenishment at sea (RAS) with USNS Joshua Humphreys in the Gulf of Aden.

At a breakfast meeting earlier today with senior shipping industry representatives, the EU Naval Force Operation Commander, Major General Martin Smith MBE, stated that whilst Somali-based piracy in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden is suppressed, there is no room for complacency regarding the on-going threat.


Madagascar Welcomes Spanish Warship ESPS Galicia
On Wednesday 9 September the Republic of Madagascar welcomed the EU Naval Force Spanish flagship, ESPS Galicia and her crew in to the port of Diego Suarez. Since this is the first time that the Spanish warship has visited Madagascar, the Spanish Ambassador to Madagascar, His Excellency Juan Ignacio Sell Sanz, Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gómez Fernández de Córdoba and ESPS Galicia’s Commanding Officer, Captain Rafael Fernández-Pintado Muñoz-Rojas, took the opportunity to invite government and military representatives on board.


President of Republic of Madagascar Visits EU Flagship ESPS Galicia During Port Visit to Diego Suarez
In the afternoon of 12th September 2015, the President of the Republic of Madagascar, His Excellency Hery Martial Rakotoarimanana Rajaonarimampianina, visited the EU Naval Force flagship, ESPS Galicia, during her port visit to Diego Suarez.


Operation Atalanta Ship HNLMS Groningen Conducts Her First Friendly Approach
On Friday 11 September 2015, Dutch Navy warship, HNLMS Groningen, carried out her first friendly approach (FA) with local Somali fishermen since she joined Operation Atalanta at the end of August.


Spanish Warship ESPS Victoria Sets Sail to Join Operation Atalanta off the Coast of Somalia
ESPS Victoria has set sail from her home port of Rota in Spain to join Operation Atalanta off the coast of Somalia.
Over the next three weeks, the Spanish warship will sail via Italy and Greece and is expected to reach Djibouti port at the start of October to start her five month counter-piracy deployment with Operation Atalanta.


Operation Atalanta Warship HNLMS Groningen Hosts Commanding Officer of South Korean Warship ROKS Chungmugong
During a port visit to Salalah in Oman, Dutch Warship, HNLMS Groningen, hosted the commanding officer of the South Korean destroyer, ROKS Chungmugong.
Commander Walter Hansen welcomed Captain Jae-Man Yoo and members of his crew on board on behalf of the EU Naval Force Commander.


Operation Atalanta Ship ESPS Meteoro Conducts Maritime Training with Tanzanian Navy
On Tuesday 15 September 2015, Spanish warship, ESPS Meteoro carried out training with the Tanzanian Navy during a port visit to Dar Es Salaam.
Officer cadets from the Tanzanian Navy were hosted on board ESPS Meteoro, where they were trained on the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), and the self protection measures implemented by merchant vessels to help keep them safe from pirate attack.


Operation Atalanta Ship ESPS Meteoro’s Commanding Officer Visits the Tanzanian Naval Force Commander
On Wednesday 18 September 2015, the commanding Officer of ESPS Meteoro, Lieutenant Commander José Almira, visited the Naval Force Commander of the Tanzanian Navy, Major General Rogastian Laswai.
The visit took place in the Tanzanian Naval Headquarters in Dar Es Salaam.  The commanders discussed the current maritime security situation in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean and the successful co-operation between the Tanzanian Navy and Operation Atalanta warships.


Operation Atalanta Flag Ship ESPS Galicia Delivers Food, Clothes and Medicine to a Madagascan Cathedral
On Monday 14 September 2015 sailors from Spanish warship ESPS Galicia delivered food, clothes and medicine to the cathedral in Diego Suarez.
The aid given will be sent to seminaries around the city to help those who are in need.


Royal Netherlands Navy Doctor Deployed with Operation Atalanta Celebrates His 60th Birthday At Sea
On Wednesday 16 September 2015 HNLMS Groningen’s doctor, Commander Ariaan Van Walsum, celebrated his 60th birthday at sea off the coast of Somalia.
HNLMS Groningen is currently deployed with the European Union’s counter-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia.


Operation Atalanta Italian Warship ITS Libeccio Hosts Pakistan Navy During Port Visit to Muscat
On Wednesday 16 September 2015, Italian warship, ITS Libeccio, hosted members of the Pakistan Navy during a port visit to Muscat.
The commanding officer of ITS Libeccio, Commander Daniele P.M. Martinuzzi,  welcomed the commanding officer of PNS Alamgir, Captain Faisal Amil, and members of his crew on board.


Operation Atalanta Force Commander Visits ESPS Meteoro at Sea
On Wednesday 23 September 2015 Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander, Rear Admiral Alfonso Gómez Fernández de Cordoba, paid a visit to ESPS Meteoro at sea off the coast of Somalia.
The two Spanish warships had met at sea to carry out a replenishment of stores and the Force Commander took the opportunity to visit ESPS Meteoro.  After being flown on board, Rear Admiral de Cordoba was given a tour of the ship and introduced to the sailors and marines on board.


German Maritime Patrol Reconnaissance Aircraft Joins Operation Atalanta
On Tuesday 15 September 2015, the German P-3C Orion, Maritime Patrol Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) joined Operation Atalanta.
Led by Commander Bodo Ahlers, the German contingent of P-3C Orion is currently based in Djibouti, and patrols the coast of Somalia, providing a detailed picture and up to date information of the coastal region.


Operation Atalanta Spanish Warships Replenish at Sea with US Navy Ship
On Friday 25 September 2015, Spanish warship, ESPS Meteoro, made a close approach to USNS John Ericsson off the coast of Somalia to refuel.
The complex manoeuvre to carry out the replenishment at sea (RAS) was made even more difficult due to rough seas and high winds.


Operation Atalanta Flagship ESPS Galicia Trains with Galmudug Coast Guard
On Tuesday 29 September 2015, Spanish warship, ESPS Galicia, conducted maritime training with the Galmadug Coast Guard.
The training, which included both theory and practical exercises, covered the maintenance of outboard motors (OBM) and boat embarkation procedures.

EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia - Operation Atalanta is part of the EU's comprehensive approach to tackle symptoms and root causes of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa adopted in November 2011.

EU NAVFOR conducts anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean and is responsible for the protection of World Food Programme (WFP) shipping carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia and Horn of Africa as well as the logistic shippings supporting the African Union troops conducting Peace Support Operations in Somalia (AMISOM). Additionally, Operation Atalanta contributes to the monitoring of fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
