Meeting of Small Group of global coalition to counter ISIL in Brussels
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders co-chaired today in Brussels with General John Allen, Special Envoy of President Barack Obama, the ‘small group’ meeting of the global coalition to counter ISIL.
Minister Reynders welcomed progress made by the coalition which, among others, allowed to regain ground on ISIL or decrease the group’s funding.
Minister Reynders insisted on the need to establish an inclusive political transition in Syria, a sole military strategy not being sufficient to provide a real answer to the legitimate grievances of the Syrian population.
The Minister stressed the role of the coalition to support the process initiated at the Vienna meeting, which brings together for the first time all regional and international partners most involved in Syria, and in particular the efforts of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Syria, Staffan de Mistura.
He stressed the support of Belgium to the efforts of the Iraqi government to develop policies that meet the aspirations of all segments of Iraqi society.
Furthermore, Minister Reynders commended the commitment of the European Union and its 28 member states in the coalition. The High Representative of the EU Federica Mogherini joined the meeting during lunch.
